Aromas are the distinctive and usually pleasant or savory smells imparted by foods (fruits, wine, coffee, tea), fragrances and perfumes, and the flavors and scents added to consumer products for customer enjoyment or brand identification. Identification of aromas is critical for brand authentication, development and formulation of new products, and continuing customer satisfaction. In manufacturing, evaluation of product aroma with an electronic nose is a quick and reliable way to detect deviations or non-conformity to product specifications, and to detect changes due to packaging (residual odors), storage and shelf-life instability due to environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light exposure). Sensigent’s portable eNose instruments, like the Cyranose 320 and MSEM 160, make simple, rapid measurements for aromas and odors to characterize, grade and qualify your products and raw materials, at the loading dock, production line, QC laboratory or wherever needed.
Odors are the distinctive but usually unpleasant or objectionable smells that arise from product degradation (aging, spoilage, rancidity) and common industrial processes. Environmental odors in particular, from chemical processing, solid waste and wastewater operations, farming and other sources, are particularly difficult to monitor, characterize and identify. This is because of several factors including molecular dispersion (advection and diffusion) as the composition and character of odors change with time and distance from the source to the fenceline and beyond. In other cases, specific odors and chemical mixtures must be monitored for compliance with local, state and federal regulations, including air pollutants and harmful chemicals.
Detection and monitoring of odors (chemical mixtures) is an inherently multi-component situation, hence competent multi-sensor monitors are required. When signals are weak or masked by other agents, or as compositions change due to dispersion, Sensigent detection, location and identification algorithms enable leading-edge performance of multi-sensor monitor instrumentation. Sensigent’s odor and chemcial monitors, like the MSEM 1400 eNose and MSEM 3200 IOMS, based on multiple arrays of nanosensors and multi-sensor data fusion algorithms, are in use worldwide to monitor the air 24/7/365 in all environments.
